While traveling along on our regular kid-free weekend road trip, Mike and I started to get hungry. I was driving this particular weekend since Mike is still no weight bearing on his ankle. That’s another story for another day, anyways …
We were traveling along the roads in Vermont and our tummies started to grumble. A hungry woman is never a good thing if left too long, at least that’s what my experience has been. So Mike quickly grabbed up my smartphone to search for some fine dining. He made an executive decision and turned on the lovely Google Maps to guide me to our undisclosed dining location.
Fine Dining at Roots – The Restaurant in Rutland, VT
Of course this restaurant had to be located on a one-way street and while I could see there was a lot of parking on the side of the road in addition to the parking lot across from Roots – The Restaurant, most spots were full. We did find one spot close enough to the restaurant and while there are parking meters, they are only in effect Monday – Friday during regular daytime hours it seems. Today was a Saturday so no need to feed the parking meter. Phew!
We got out of the vehicle, Mike on his knee scooter me beside him and entered the fine dining location of Roots – The Restaurant. Not knowing pricing or what was to be expected, we took our chances because we enjoy eating at new places. Once we entered it was evident that you had to have a reservation to eat here. Thankfully the hostess was able to get us a table and we sat down to peek at the menu. There were lists of items that I had no idea what they were. This is not your typical small town gal menu; this is sort of an elegant list of fine dining menu options.
Our Final Thoughts on Roots – The Restaurant
We enjoyed each of the menu options; appetizer, soup, entrée and dessert. The appetizer we selected was Roots – The Restaurant fine dining’s cheese board and a side of their soup of the day, potato onion soup. For the cheese board you can select 2 cheese options out of a list that included approximately 6 local cheese options. We doubled up on a local aged cheddar, the cheese board arrived with peppered jelly, grapes, aged cheddar cheese, sundried tomato …
For our meal, I had a Hathaway Burger with sautéed onions, mushrooms, bacon, lettuce and tomato. This entre included a side, and with that I selected coleslaw. Anyone who knows me well knows that if I am out in a fine dining atmosphere then I will attempt to try coleslaw because it’s one of my favorite things to eat ever. While I did not care for Roots – The Restaurant’s coleslaw, it’s mostly because I am spoiled by the way my Gram makes coleslaw with a sweet twist, this coleslaw wasn’t sweet.
Mike enjoyed Roots – The Restaurant’s house ravioli and boy was he pleasantly fulfilled eating that up.
For dessert Mike and I opted in to share a piece of carrot cake to end our fine dining experience.
