Dragging out the Drive – Keeping Kids Entertained on the Road

When it comes to planning a long journey with children, there is a lot to take into consideration. Planning where to stop for toilet breaks and how much food you’re going to bring for the journey is one thing, but when you have to think about how to keep your little darlings entertained for the duration of the trip is another thing completely.

You will need to think of something to hold their attention, something that can be adaptable and change at a moment’s notice to alleviate any tantrums that may be brewing. After all, you’ve probably got a while to go – and who wants to spend that time sulking?

Take in What’s Around You

Traditional car games are always a firm favourite. You’ve got the classic ‘I Spy’ to use, but consider researching some more games to pass the time – although it sounds silly now, you’ll be patting yourself on the back later on. Think back to games you might have played; 20 Questions is still as fun now as it was back then.

Watch a Film

If you have data on your tablet or phone, put it to good use by streaming a favourite show or film from a site such as https://getshowboxapp.com/. While some may see it as the easy way out, chances are it’ll give them some time to sit back and relax before you reach your destination. You never know, you might actually be able to get a bit of peace and quiet before reaching your destination!

Make up a Song

This can get as silly as you want it to be. Start out with something simple like a Limerick about where you’re going (i.e. “There was a young man from Kansas…”) and then use inspiration drawn from the rhymes to make up a song about your destination and what you’ll do when you get there. It could be something you reflect on in years to come, bringing the same ditty back up whenever you make the same journey and adding new bits on to it. It’s quite a lovely memento to take away from any vacation.

If all else fails, a plethora of snacks and drinks and the recommendation of a good nap before you get there aren’t bad ideas. It is hard to keep a child entertained even when you’ve got everything around you in a good space, never mind in a cramped car with limited resources. Just remember: there are many parents who have been in exactly the same position as you before. You’re not doing right or wrong if your kids are bored on these long journeys, you’re just doing your best – it takes a lot to occupy a small mind for such a length of time. Don’t despair and keep the destination firmly in mind. You’ll get there in the end and you’ll be wondering what all the fuss was about. Keep in mind what did and didn’t work though; you’ve got the same journey home, too…
