Working from home is my dream come true, as a mom to three children, working from home simply makes sense. I learned the hard way last year when I took on a job outside of the home as an administrative assistant internally for a temp agency. While the work was fantastic, after paying weekly daycare for the boys to attend an after school program and paying for health insurance and having all of the taxes taken out, I was broke. After a year being in this work outside of the home position, I found working from home may be challenging and there are days I am broke, but overall I enjoy more financial freedom and the ability to be home with the kids. I prefer working at home because I can work a schedule that suits my lifestyle. If the kids are on school vacation, I can work my hours around them. If the kids are in school, I can work during school hours. If I am sick or exhausted and need to simply lie in bed, I can do that without causing a huge financial strain on the household.
When you work at home you must learn to develop some sort of routine though, because without it you will do what I did in the first couple of years working from home; run around in chaos and not have a significant income because you have zero routine in place. As I ventured back to work at home full time in February 2016, I knew having a plan and routine was going to matter. My rent was over $1,000 at that point in time and to current date we are paying $1,650 in rent per month. It’s no joke being house renters, the costs are high! In order to stay above water, I had to figure out a routine that worked for the family, for who I am as a person and allowed for maximum revenue.
Here is How I Started Sticking to a Work at Home Routine
I found that I write best first thing in the morning, a large number of my clients are monthly ghostwriting clients. This means that they pay me a monthly fee in exchange for delivery of anywhere between 2-5 articles per week, depending upon the monthly plan they have. Since I have a specific number of articles to satisfy for clients each week as well as maintain content on two of my own blogs, I have to be certain the first part of the morning is designated to writing articles. When I stick to this, my revenue increases substantially and I usually have all content written before Friday arrives.
Knowing that I lose the writing mindset just prior to lunch hour, I then switch over to dropping links for clients who pay me a monthly fee to complete chore threads for them. I no longer add clients to this area of business, but those I do have need me to drop links in various FB groups and then reciprocate everyone else within that thread after the thread has closed. This means I can complete this area of work any time after 6pm eastern or 8pm Eastern but dropping the links must occur during the day.
After the articles are written for my clients, direct sales in FB groups and my blogs, I drop the threads and then look around to see if I have any sponsored content, campaigns or other such tasks to complete that day. Generally speaking I can work anywhere between 5-6 hours per day and make a full time income, but I am constantly on the lookout for new ways to increase revenue because we are a family of five, summer is coming and we do have a guinea pig plus two doggies to feed as well.
Overall my tips to Sticking to a Work at Home Routine are:
- Know what time of day works for various tasks – such as me acknowledging I write best first thing in the morning.
- Set a time that works for not only yourself, but your clients and the family – remember you are working from home to enjoy life too.
- Consistently have multiple forms of revenue – without multiple methods of making money you may not succeed in work at home.
- Stay true to you and take a break when needed – there’s nothing worse than pushing yourself beyond your means, learn to be okay taking a break when needed.
