Marble Quarry that Built New York Public Library

When you travel across New England, you certainly come across some really beautiful scenes. From the farm fields stretching for miles in Vermont to the deep history embedded in New Hampshire’s countryside, the views are simply gorgeous. Two weekends a month, that’s four days a month, we hop in that van and we hit the gas. I would say we travel across the pavement to see what New England travel destination we will end up at, but normally it’s dirt roads and dust and cows all over the place. New England is a sight to see and being that I was born in New Hampshire, it’s an area that’s close to my heart.

New England Marble Quarry

Today I wanted to share some photos from one of our trips at Dorset Quarry in Dorset, Vermont. I am not even certain how we happened upon this location, perhaps we were in the Green Mountain National Forest on this particular day and headed towards what we now know is the historical town of Dorset, Vermont. Our bearings led us here and we quickly parked to check out the quarry. This old marble quarry was fully functioning back in 1910, but according to one source {Dorset Historical Society}, the quarry went out of commission when a stream filled it with water sometime in 1917.

Swimming Spot

As this now privately owned location becomes a wildly popular swimming spot during our hot New England summertime, the owners are having difficulties maintaining the safety of this old quarry. I can imagine because just this last summer in 2017, we drove passed hoping to put Ambit Drone up and there were just far too many people there. The main parking area was full, the main road was probably one mile plus deep full of cars on the side of the road. People from New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire seemed to have flocked to the Dorset Quarry and we couldn’t safely put Ambit Drone up for any aerial shots this past season.

While I can’t share any drone photography with you today, I certainly hope that you enjoy some of the photos we captured at ground level in Dorset, Vermont on this particularly beautiful road tripping day.
