I have always been an advocate for enjoying life. I think it’s important that we learn to pause for moments with our family and moments alone. Since I’ve been co-parenting a really long time, I got used to having two weekends a month for my alone time. As time has moved on and the firstborn is getting older, my “kid-free” time is less and less. Even though I have less “kid-free” moments, I still try to balance alone time with motherhood. I wanted to share a few simple ways I pause to enjoy life and motherhood.
Simple Ways to Pause to Enjoy Life and Motherhood
Have Dinner Outside. The kids and I may have cooked a quick meal inside, but they worked to set up the outside patio table. We even hooked up Jenny the pug so that she was outside with us. This was an easy way to pause and enjoy motherhood because someone had to feed the kids.
Take a Warm Bath. There are quite a few times that I’ll tell the kids that I’m going in my bedroom to soak in the bathtub. They don’t even second guess it. I’m lucky that they’re old enough to tend to their own stuff long enough for me to soak in the tub and wash away my stress.
Take a Nature Walk. The kids and I enjoy taking random walks around our local town. You may find us on a nature trail, walking our neighborhood, walking the track, or just taking a hike up a mountain. We really love getting outside together to find what we can find outside on a nature walk.
Take a Stroll Alone. Pause motherhood and just go take a walk by yourself. This is really relaxing for me. I know that taking a daily walk helps to slow my mind down and ease any stress that’s weighing on my mind.
Do Some Yard Work. I’ll admit the kids aren’t too happy when I say it’s yard work day. I get it, who wants to go outside on a nice day and have to rake, mow or pick up the yard? But it’s part of life and so I do my best to make this yard work time fun and adventurous for the kids.
Play a Game With the Kids. We have many games in the house that aren’t electronic. Most recently my youngest kiddo was all about having me pause work so that we could do a Bean Boozled Challenge.
What is Bean Boozled?
Bean Boozled is a game you’ll love to hate. Seriously. I remember a while back we played this challenge and I ended up with a skunk flavored jelly bean. I am not even kidding. That flavor stuck in my mouth for days! Bean Boozled is basically a jelly bean game, with a twist. Each jelly bean has a yummy or yucky flavor. One example is that the orange jelly bean may taste like peach or barf. It’s really gross and there are many combinations of Bean Boozled jelly beans. You have a spinner inside of the Bean Boozled game pack, along with some various flavor jelly beans. Each person spins the spinner on their turn and everyone grabs whatever color jelly bean the spinner lands on. Countdown from 3 and place a jelly bean in your mouth. Watch as each of you make faces when you realize whether you just bit into a good or bad jelly bean. While this game isn’t my favorite, it surely gets lots of laughter from the kids when I willingly join in on their fun. You can pick up Bean Boozled just about anywhere, but I prefer to buy it on Amazon because they tend to have a wide variety of options and the lowest prices.

Many people will tell me that I do this whole juggling work at home mom thing well, but I admit, there are days that the kids simply run the house. I am a single mom who is trying to make the most of every moment. My firm belief in pausing to enjoy childhood is what keeps me going strong. I know that everything in the adult world will work out as it’s supposed to. I know that I will figure everything out in time, but what I can’t get back are these moments with my kids who are growing too fast!
