Tips for Safer Online Dating

Online dating can be so frustrating at times. Yesterday I shared some real dangers of online dating, but today I decided to provide some tips so that you can try to enjoy this part of your single life. There are a few tips that you should abide by when you start using online dating apps or sites to connect with new people. The tips I’m sharing today will get you headed in the right direction but in all honesty? My biggest tip to you is to just follow your instincts, we have gut instincts for a reason and so many people, myself included – ignore them! Do not ignore the signs, listen to your gut, and never settle for less than what you deserve.

Tips for Safer Online Dating

After you begin talking to someone for a while you might consider looking at their social media accounts to see if they have a Facebook, Twitter, etc. Look at their friend’s list, do they look like real people, what type of pictures are they posting, etc. This can help give you a good idea of the person they are, or least show you their sense of humor or beliefs in various things based on the memes that they share. Don’t stalk them, but briefly review their social media accounts, just to get a feel for who they are. I have a client who offers background checks, boy that would have helped a ton with my past attempts at dating 😜

  • Meet in a public place if you do decide to meet. After you talk to someone for a while and decide to meet make sure to meet in a well lit and busy place. This will help if you feel uncomfortable you are not alone with the person. You also don’t want them meeting you for the first time at your home, because if they are not who they say they are, they now know where you live. You could even have a friend be in the same restaurant just in case you need help getting away from the person.

  • When you are hopping on dating sites make sure you are using well known and trusted sites. When you have a friend or family member who has success with meeting someone on a reputable dating site it can help let you know that you have a better chance of meeting someone real. If you have never heard of the dating site it can be harder because the whole site could be a scam or full of fake profiles.

  • Know that there is a good chance that you could get catfished. So if you truly want to meet someone after a decent amount of time making plans to meet or even video chat. If after a few tries it doesn’t work out then you more than likely are talking to someone who isn’t being fully honest about their identity.

  • Lastly don’t send money to anyone you meet online, no matter what their story is. That is how a lot of people are phishing people. They say they love you or want to be with you but need money to come from wherever they live. That is one of the biggest stories that so many people are still unaware of even after it has been happening so much.

Just make sure you take things slow and walk with caution. Really try to do what you can and take things slow to ensure this person is who they say they are, and they won’t harm you in any way. I promise you that if this person is truly interested in you, then they will have the respect for you to take the time needed to make sure you two are a real match.

If your gut is saying RUN, then please, by all means, ghost them, run, whatever it takes! You’re not a bad person for following your gut instincts.
