It’s tempting to switch all appliances off when traveling due to the potential cost savings. Some obvious choices include the refrigerator and pool pump, but there are also some less-than-obvious choices that could run up a substantial tab in repair costs if switched off for prolonged periods. In order to have a happy trip that relaxes and rejuvenates, it’s important to come back to a home that functions without hassle. The following appliances are recommended to stay on during those breaks.
Keep the Air Conditioning On
Although it may not make sense to keep the air conditioner on when you’re not around, this could be a large expense if adverse weather hits. During the winter months, frozen pipes can run up quite a bill if the heat is switched off. Summer months don’t get off easy either, as hot and stuffy air that does not experience any circulation is the breeding ground for many different types of molds and germs. It also doesn’t save that much money when the unit is on full blast to heat up or cool down the house quickly after a long trip.
Turn On the Lights

It almost makes sense to switch all the lights off, especially when going away for more than just a few days. But this changes when you look at your home through the eyes of a burglar. Lights off for more than a few days will create an easy target for an opportunistic criminal. Leaving a light on may also not be the answer as they will notice if it burns during the day. The answer is to have one or a few lights on a timer to go on and off during different intervals after dark.
Why Is the Fridge An Obvious Choice to Leave On?
Apart from food spoilage, there are some other concerns such as mold and bacteria. These form when the fridge is no longer cool enough to keep them at bay. You can empty your fridge of items that could spoil and fill the fridge up with water bottles instead. The fuller the fridge and freezer, the more economical they are as they don’t have to work too hard for too long. If you want to turn off the fridge entirely, empty it completely and give a good clean. The doors should remain open, as well as all the little compartments, to ensure it remains aired out.
Be Cautious With the Circuit Breaker
When there is absolutely nothing that needs to remain on inside, the circuit breaker will take care of all the outlets. Switching off the circuit breaker is not recommended as it causes damage every time the switch is flipped. This means that the switch should only be used in an emergency to ensure its longevity. To reduce costs, it’s recommended that specific items are switched off instead. These include geysers, ice machines, phone chargers, and more.
If you are concerned about the safety of your home, you should ensure that there is an uninterrupted power supply to your security alarms and smoke alarms. The watchful eye of a trusted neighbor or family member also goes a long way.
