I am pretty open and honest about having anxiety, but that’s because I’ve lived with it for many years. Little did I know that most of my teen moments where I was deathly afraid to go into a store or even the bank alone were signs of my anxiety. Later in life, sometime after my firstborn arrived, I was finally diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. While I did take medication for a brief moment way back in my mid-twenties, I no longer take medication for anxiety. I’ve learned various coping mechanism to deal with my nerves. Today I wanted to share a few things I do when I feel all nerved up, hopefully, these tips will help you stay calm when your anxiety starts to take control.
How do I Calm My Nerves?
Below are a few easy tips to help calm your nerves. Remember that I am not a physician and if you feel your nerves or anxiety is out of control that you need to seek professional help.
Sip Green Tea – many friends swear by this method to calm their nerves. Green tea contains L-Theanine which has been proven to reduce anger.
Meditate – try some relaxing songs that are geared to help calm your nerves or download a meditation app. There are many options in the app marketplace.
Eat a Mango – this fruit contains linalool which has proven to help reduce stress levels. If your nerves are acting up due to stress, enjoy this fruity tropical treat.
Hand Massage – I’ve been known to do this when my nerves are high, I’ll start squeezing my hands and massaging them. This helps keep the focus off my anxiety and I slowly calm.
Listen to Music – blasting any type of music that resonates with you personally helps calm your nerves. Lately, I’ve been listening to sublime, Tim McGraw or Bob Marley to calm my nerves.
Squeeze a Stress Ball – you can make your own stress ball or buy one online. Grab the stress ball and slowly squeeze on it in your hands, this will release those nervous feelings slowly.
Take a Walk – being one with nature always calms my nerves. That peaceful sound of the birds chirping and around my parts, there’s a brook that winds through the neighborhood. It’s relaxing.
Call a Friend – create a list of your top two friends who won’t engage in creating drama, they’ll listen and guide you back to a place of calm. This is my go-to when my nerves are at their worst.
