Create a Clickable Link in Canva

Canva is one of the most efficient and easy-to-use free tools available on the market. Millions of graphic designers, bloggers, and professionals use Canva to create visually appealing designs free of cost.

With an estimated 30 million monthly users, Canva is dominating the graphic design online market. And while the tool is highly user-friendly, certain individuals need some guidance on how to navigate around the software.

One problem that stands out and which I have seen even the most professional designers struggle with is adding links and hyperlinks to the Canva designs: mainly over specific keywords or images. This is not a brainer and requires minimal effort. Today, I will be discussing the functionality of Canva that allows images and text to become clickable via hyperlinking.

Does Canva Allow Hyperlinks?

A broad answer to that question would be, YES! Canva does allow images, icons, and relevant keywords to become clickable. You can link your website to the logo of your design, or maybe you want some keywords to be hyperlinked to your website. All of these functions can be performed via the hyperlink tool in Canva.

However, like everything, Canva does have its limitations.

While Canva allows almost all websites to be hyperlinked, the problem occurs when you try to link email via the hyperlink option. Currently, Canva does not offer a clickable email dialog box, and hence, its functionality is limited to websites only. While this might not be much relevant to you, it was still worth pointing out. Food for thought!

How to Create a Clickable Link in Canva?

Now comes the important part. Here, I will try to chalk out all the steps you should take to create links and hyperlinks on your Canva designs.

Step 1: The first thing you must do is to visit canva.com and log in to your Canva account. If you don’t have a Canva account, sign up here!

Step 2: Next, you select your design or create a new one. For this example, I will create a new design and choose an Instagram post as my design option.

Step 3: If you have selected an existing design, Great! If not, create one, or choose a sample from Canva’s vast library.

Step 4: Once you have selected your design, click on the element you wish to add the hyperlink to. I am going to select some keywords that I want to link back to my website.

Step 5: Once your keywords are selected, the taskbar will show a number of different functions you can perform on your keywords. I am not going to edit the text and leave it as it was. Instead, I am going to click on the three horizontal dots to show more options.

Step 6: On clicking the three dots, additional functions appear. Notice the chain icon third from the right. Click on it, and a pop-up will appear.

Step 7: Enter the address of the website you want the text to link back to and click on Apply. I am going to enter my own website brandyellen.com just for simplicity.

And Voila! You’re all done with keyword linking. However, to add hyperlinks to an image or an icon, the steps may change slightly.

In the case of images and icons, you must select the relevant element for your hyperlink in step 4.

Step 5(a): Once you have clicked on your image or icon, the taskbar will display different functions and options which may be slightly different from the text functions.

Step 6(a): And just like in the previous case, click on the chain icon, this time fourth from the right, and a pop-up will appear.

Repeat step 7 from before, and there you have it, your images, icons, and your keywords all hyperlinked back to your targeted website.

Saving and Downloading Your Linked Design

Congratulations! You are done with your design hyperlinking; however, these links will not be useful unless you download and publish your design. To do this, you must follow certain steps to ensure that your links are clickable in your downloaded file type; otherwise, your time spent on creating links will go to waste.

Step 1: Click on the Download button on the top-right corner of your Canva screen or click on the three horizontal dots for advanced options, and then click Download.

Step 2: Notice the default file type has been set to PNG. While PNG is the best-suited type for graphic design, it will, however, not be able to retain the clickable links and would just be a flat image. For you to have a clickable element in your Canva design, you must download a PDF version of your design. Canva offers PDF downloads in two types, i.e., Standard and Print. Standard PDF focuses on small file size to reduce the storage space required. Print PDF focuses on increased quality with the large file size to ensure greater pixels in print form.

For our example, I will choose the Standard PDF file type from the drop-down menu.

Using this how to add hyperlinks in Canva tutorial can result in having a wide range of PDF documents to share with others. I see this as being a useful option for bloggers who want to create a clickable holiday gift guide.

I know that featuring affiliate products in a magazine-style PDF format will surely help your audience buy those holiday gift ideas with ease.
