Did you know that America has a Stonehenge?

There\’s this place in Salem, New Hamshire called America\’s Stonehenge and my family ventured there a while back. Today I\’m sharing my experiences, a few photos, and what I think about the area so that you can enjoy a visit to a local attraction right here in New Hampshire!

I didn\’t share as many photographs as I might otherwise with a location because they like you to come witness this place on your own. The photographs that I took will look nothing like what it is in real life. Below is a beautiful stone, but you do know not what they assume it is or how it relates to the moon or sun phases, now do you? You can read about it when you visit!

Before you go, they will have a YouTube video to watch. You can buy your tickets online, and watch the video online, or they will have you watch it upon arrival. The choice is yours, but the video is important to know more about this location and what you\’re about to witness when you venture into this magical space.

What is America\’s Stonehenge?

Was it constructed by Native American cultures or migrant European populations? The origins remain a mystery. America\’s Stonehenge, a complex of man-made chambers, walls, and ceremonial meeting places, is over 4,000 years old and is likely the oldest man-made structure in the United States.

Much like England\’s Stonehenge, America\’s Stonehenge was built by ancient people who possessed advanced knowledge of astronomy and stone construction. The site has been established as an accurate astronomical calendar, capable of determining specific solar and lunar events throughout the year.

Throughout the site, various inscriptions have been discovered, including Ogham, Phoenician, and Iberian Punic script. Dr. Barry Fell of Harvard University conducted extensive research on these inscriptions, which he detailed in his book \”America B.C.\”

We took the drive to venture this way because it was something that we had on our \”to-do\” list but hadn\’t gone. The youngest teen wanted to check it out, and so we did.

You\’ll see our family rank, as always, at the bottom of this blog post.

They try their best to make this an accessible spot for all, as seen on the above sign. They have a path of wheelchair or stroller access. They also have a lovely gift shop inside, where you can gather up the kids to get something special to remember this visit to a historical location in New Hampshire.

I collect shot glasses, so I grabbed one from their gift shop.

They have some alpacas here that you can see, I am not sure about touching them, as they spook easily but you can at least say hello. We did the Stonehenge trail but there are other trails and experiences here in Salmen, NH under the same admission price. We ran out of time, as they do adhere to a strict 4 pm is the last admission that will be given.

We wanted to make it out in time.

We had a great time learning about each of the formations here, and how old they are. That is really fascinating to us. If you\’re into historical sights in New England, then I highly suggest you check out America\’s Stonehenge at least once in your lifetime. I don\’t know as though we would go back, but it was surely a wonderful trip.
