How to Make 2022 The Best Year Yet

In less than a month, it will be a new year and that means that it’s time for change. Even if you don’t want things to change things up 100%, you can want to make small changes or pushes to make sure that you are living your best life. This might mean small changes mentally, so that you are focusing more on happiness. Or, this could mean that you are making big changes with your relationships, financial situation, work, or lifestyle. Either way, let’s all agree to make 2022 the best year yet. Here are a few ways to make that happen, if you are wondering how to make 2022 the best year yet — 

 

Have at least one big goal for the year

Setting at least one big goal that you can use as a final stepping stone is a great idea. You can set two, but do not set more than three. In my experience, too many goals start getting in each other’s way. That leads to confusion and a feeling of paralysis, and you might as well not have any big goals because it can feel too overwhelming to get it all done. So make a commitment to setting just one or two big goals for 2021. Put it in writing: your big promise to yourself, to your spouse or other loved ones, to your work colleagues, etc. If it’s a really big goal, don’t worry about “the how” right now. Realize that putting your commitment in writing does something psychologically that just telling yourself mentally does not do. It gives you resolve – it gives you a path to follow. It’s a way of saying, “I’m going to do this or else!” Telling others also creates accountability. Tell them to get on your case if you’re not making progress.

Do a review of 2021

What went well this year? Where did you feel stuck? What was out of your control, and how did you react? What did you learn? Is there anything you can be grateful for in 2021? Nothing will improve your big “why” more than gratitude. You still have family, you still have friends one phone call or text message away and you still have people from work you can reach out to. Plus, the sun keeps coming up daily, your heart keeps beating, your feet and hands continue to work for you. Start thinking in abundance. Start working to become the person who’ll achieve the big goal(s) you promised yourself. And then imagine how your future self will look back a year from now and think, “2022 was my best year ever!” 

Check in frequently

A mistake we make when setting New Year’s Resolutions, is the “set it and forget it” mentality. Meaning, we set goals in January, and don’t come back to re-visit them until the end of the year. In reality, we should be checking in on our New Year’s Resolutions daily! It’s the decisions we make every day that dictate our actions, and ultimately lead to our results. By reminding ourselves on a daily basis of what our big goals are, we keep them front and center, prioritizing our goals and corresponding habits into our day to day lives. Be consistent and remind yourself of your big goals and sub-goals every single day. Write it out and tape it on your bathroom mirror, make it your cellphone background — whatever it takes to keep it top of mind!

Make big changes, when needed

Sometimes, goals to lose weight or make sure we are keeping up with friends is not enough. Sometimes, to really achieve full happiness, we need to make big changes in our life. Maybe this means getting uncomfortable to reduce debt. Or, maybe this means that you need to make a huge lifestyle change – like switching jobs, or even moving somewhere far away. It’s not ALL about setting goals or creating change for yourself. Maybe you are not in a position right now for change, or maybe you cannot immediately think of any goals to set for yourself right now. That’s okay! If you are stuck where you are (no matter the reason — it might be a very positive reason!), all you have to do is make the best of it. Think positive. Keep on keeping on. This year will be amazing for you, but you have to make it happen for yourself, both in your actions and even more importantly, you have to make it positive in your mind. Our thoughts and feelings control SO much of how we feel, so make sure you are keeping a strong mindset.
