Are you physically prepared to have a child?
A baby can only be as healthy as their mother. As such, it’s important to be physically prepared for the responsibility of having a baby.
One of the biggest factors is preparing your body for pregnancy. This generally involves having a balanced lifestyle where you exercise on a regular basis and eat in moderation. A balanced diet is important to maintain good nutrition levels which will ultimately be passed on to your child.
As such, if you’re currently not watching your nutrition levels or getting regular exercise, you should build up those habits first before you decide to have a child.
When you are pregnant, you’ll find it hard to maintain your current fitness levels since you’ll spend a lot of time resting at home. As such, you need to physically prepare your body for pregnancy if you want to avoid any potential complications in your pregnancy.
You should also be getting an examination from your doctor as soon as possible. They’ll analyze your body and determine if you have any pre-existing conditions that could affect your pregnancy.
Even if there are risks involved, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t get pregnant. It just means that you need to be a little more careful before you become pregnant and you should look for ways to improve your overall health before you go through with it.
Factors such as the medication you’re taking will also need to be taken into consideration. You’ll also want to think about your family history to see if there are any inherited diseases or conditions that may cause complications.
Again, this isn’t something that you should be deciding for yourself. You should consult the expert opinion of a doctor or your physician before you go through with your pregnancy.
Lastly, you should also be doing your best to cut out any bad habits that you might have. This can include smoking, binge eating or excessive alcohol consumption.
All three of these can negatively affect the health of you and your baby. It’s vital that you seek assistance if you find it difficult to break these bad habits.

Are you financially prepared for having a child?
You also need to think about the financial side of having a child. This can include costs such as housing, food and healthcare. This will then evolve into childcare, education and other expenses as they grow older.
While you can get a lot of assistance to help pay for these necessities, you ultimately want to ensure that you have a stable financial situation before you have a child.
This can prevent any potential issues in the future and will ensure that your child is raised in a comfortable environment where everything is provided for them.
Thankfully, there are some ways to cut down on the expenses of your child. For example, you can think about what to add to your pregnancy registry as it’s typical to receive gifts from friends and family members when you’re pregnant.
You should also consider looking at government funding to see if you’re eligible for any kind of welfare or benefit payments that can help with the expenses.
At the end of the day, it’s going to be your responsibility to save money for your child and also secure a stable regular income. While there are services you can rely on for help, you should ultimately aim to provide everything for your child through your own means.
Make sure you’re financially secure before you consider having a child and it’ll make your life (and theirs) a lot easier.

Dealing with the emotional side of having a child
When bringing up your baby, it’s also common to have emotional concerns that may be difficult to deal with. For instance, you’ll have a lot less time for yourself since you have a child to look after.
For many years after having a child, you’re going to be stuck at home looking after them or relying on childcare services to watch over your child. This means you and your partner will need to decide on who stays at home to look after the child.
For some people, this will mean working at home instead of in the office so you can look after your child as you earn a living. Sadly, this isn’t possible for everyone.
If you have no option to work from home, you’ll likely need to rely on friends and family members to look after your child as you work.
You should also get used to taking responsibility for raising your child. While there’s a lot of excitement and satisfaction that comes with raising a child, it doesn’t come without its cons.
For instance, you’re going to be losing a lot of sleep if your child constantly wakes up at night or cries a lot. You’ll also need to cut back on your personal entertainment expenses and divert those funds to raise your child.
You might also feel like you have less personal time for relationships since most of your day will be spent looking after your child.
Finally, you might also experience parental guilt. Although no parent is perfect, it’s common to blame yourself for any problems or shortcomings that your child experiences.
This can negatively affect your mental state and cause issues such as depression or anxiety when your child is concerned. It’s difficult to break out of these feelings, but there are support groups and specialists that can help you cope with the emotional side of raising a child.
I didn’t plan my first pregnancy. She was a complete surprise. I was blessed because my sisters are just 5 years older so my mom had a ton of hand me downs from them. I also choose to breastfeed. Formula is so expensive and at the time I was poor.
That’s so lucky about having hand me downs. My firstborn had a lot of hand me downs, as a local person who owned a pizza place had just had a daughter not long before I did, so we had a huge assortment of clothes for the first few years of her life. That was rather helpful.
I think more people need to think about this. While having children is so rewarding its flips your life upside down..particularly on the emotional side. well done for being so upfront about this.
It totally flips your world upside down. Our middle is on the spectrum, high functioning autism, and OMG I had to learn how to live a predictable lifestyle with a schedule and routine. I’m a very ‘fly by the moment’ chick, so that was a huge change after giving birth to our second child.
Yes, I think it’s important to think about before having children. These are definitely helpful, for sure!
These are all true. One should be prepared and ready, plan it if you have to.
Parenting is not for the faint of heart. These are important things to think about, I also wish more people would consider adopting a child.
I like that you started with the physical aspects. You need to understand genetics when you are approaching this!
You would be surprised how many people don’t think about the issues that should be resovled before they have kids. I have a more than a few people tell me they wish they would have thought more about child readiness before they had kids.
Yes, you have to be prepared in all aspects. It can be challenging to raise a child but I will not have it any other way.
This is very helpful! My husband and I are thinking of having a baby within the next year, I need to show him this so we can be prepared!
These are great points to consider! We were a bit worried about finances with our first, so we waited a little bit. But now with our third coming, it’s like Meh, may as well add another one to the circus lol. You get more confident with each one sometimes.
There are so many things to consider when having a baby. Thank you for this post people will learn alot.
These are some great things to think of before you have a child -I don’t think you can ever be fully prepared, but there are ways to help you be more so.
