Old Train Area in the Rocks in Newbury, NH

Sharing is Caring … Share with a Friend!

Heading into Newbury, NH from the Sunapee State Park area, you\’ll eventually come upon the harbor. You can recognize the harbor, by the caboose, which is seen below. This area is the Newbury, NH Harbor area where boats come in to dine at Bubba\’s Bar & Grille.

Key Takeaways

  • Newbury, NH has a rich history with an old train track section in the rocks.
  • You can visit this area via a pull-off near the 50mph sign.
  • Some experienced rock climbers seem to be climbing the rocks.
  • The average person can sight see, but cannot get down to the old train tracks from here.
  • There\’s a spooky area that caused Brandy to feel extremely ill during this visit.

I haven\’t been to that restaurant in many years, but they served delicious meals the last time I ventured there. For this story, we will drive past Bubba\’s on the right, and continue straight until just after or just before the speed limit turns 50mph.

There will be a bed of tall rocks on the side, and a turn-off or pull off as some call it, right there after the rocks. Pull to the side and park.

We ventured this way the other day, and while I have driven past this spot many times in my 40-plus years of living in the area, I didn\’t know all of the little hidden gems. Justin has grown up (well spent a lot of earlier time of his life) in this area, so he knows more of the hidden history of the train tracks, and other fun spots he used to frequent as a child.

He wanted to show us this one spot, located where I shared above, that has a cut through the rocky environment so that the trains could flow through back in the day. As a teen or younger adult, he recalled walking through this valley, however, when we ventured there on this day, there was no immediate place to get down below.

He peered over the side only to see it was muddy and disgusting down there, so unlike years ago when you could go down there, it didn\’t look like many people go down there these days. Although, Justin mentioned you could see carabeneers on the rocks for people who must have been doing some rock climbing in the area.

This is not the spooky part of the story for me, the above is all pretty fascinating and aside from my occasional jitters over heights, all was pretty normal. The youngest teen got to the top of the rocks and peered over, his Dad (Justin) did the same. And I didn\’t feel super off-kilter about it, rather just slightly nervous as is my normal.

And then, it happened …

I ventured a bit closer to where our son was and found myself shaking. My entire being was shaky, I almost felt if I kept going I would have fallen over. Then I got so shaky that I felt nauseous or sick, almost like I could throw up.

I told the guys, \”Hey I don\’t know why, but I am feeling super shaky and like I may throw up. I am going to go back, you guys keep exploring, I will be fine.\”

And I ventured back towards the vehicle, but as I turned around, I saw this … and so did the guys.

There is a spot across the open area, that by the way you cannot get over to from where we stood, that has a cross, a couple of plant holders, and what looked to me like an old sign container made of wood. Perhaps it once housed a sign of some sort.

It was in this moment that I realized perhaps something awful happened here or at least painful, and that me being sensitive the way I am, is often found having these types of feelings for no good reason.

You see, I didn\’t see this cross *before* the upset episode I shared above, it was only after this situation happened for me that we spotted the cross area. I looked up on my walk back towards the vehicle and saw it.

As I got closer to my vehicle, even near the ridge of this huge space cut between two rocks, I was fine. It was just passed the empty beer bottles and a bit closer to where my son was standing up in that photo above that I felt ill.

I am not sure what happened here, but I am convinced that something did occur that was very painful, scary, and sad for the soul of the human body that experienced it. I felt it with my entire being and I believe it to be true.

These are the spooky things that happened here in New Hampshire from time to time. I\’ve only had this feeling about once or twice before, once being in our last house. I stood on the old fireplace area bricks that had been a part of the original structure (I imagine) and I felt similarly sick, scared, and immense sadness like I\’d never felt before.

After that day, I never stood two feet on the brick space ever again in that home. I will do the same for this area in Newbury, NH, as curious as I am, that feeling wasn\’t one I would wish upon anyone else.

So, while I may never know for sure about what happened to cause me to connect with whatever happened in the past, I do know with my entire being that my sensitivity to these things is coming back after years of healing my soul from damage that I allowed into my personal life.

This feeling was scary, and sad, and made me sick but it did more than that, it reminded me that we can feel in ways we cannot explain in our human realm, but it simply reminds us that we are all unique and connected as a spiritual race having a human being experience.
