Social media is a great tool for meeting new people, growing connections, connecting with brands, and more. There are more dating sites now to allow you an opportunity to connect with someone in hopes of building a lasting relationship. But with all the wonderful things social media can bring also comes negatives. We will talk about how social media impacts relationships in today’s world.

When you go out to dinner or are sitting waiting for the bus you can look around and see probably more than half the people around you are glued to their phone. Technology is a constant in people’s lives. I remember back when True Life on MTV was a huge hit people were going in and having surgery on their wrists because their cell phone was causing issues on the wrist. We seem to not be able to live without our smartphones for that long.

When the world is constantly attached to their phones through the social media apps, you can bet it will take a toll on your relationship, whether you are married or freshly dating. The constant need to refresh to see the latest updates or see if a new email came in, can really take a toll in time on a relationship.

When you both or one are on the phone constantly there is no room to have a conversation let alone a connection. How can you grow together if you both are just skimming through the latest Instagram photos or even Snapchats? You lose sight of the importance of just sitting down and spending quality time together.

5 Ways Social Media Impacts Relationships

Connection

When you both or one are on the phone constantly there is no room to have a conversation let alone a connection. How can you grow together if you both are just skimming through the latest Instagram photos or even Snapchats? You lose sight of the importance of just sitting down and spending quality time together.

Talking To Each Other

Ever go visit someone or they come to you and to find they just sit on their phone the entire time. After about an hour they get up and leave, only to find that it was pointless they came by because you didn’t even really talk? In a relationship, you have to have that healthy communication or you will grow apart and realize you don’t need each other.

Cheating Accusations

Many people have been known to cheat via online. Whether it is an old girlfriend you found on Facebook, a group chat conversation that grew to more, cheating is very real. It seems like when you spend all your time online talking to someone and not the people right in front of you, cheating can happen. You can also be accused of cheating because you are always on your phone, which can hurt your relationship or make it to where it won’t recover.

Feeling Less Worthy

To go with the above cheating accusations portion of how social media impacts relationships, it can go deeper than that. When your partner seems to put their social media connections and conversations before you, it can feel as if you’re not enough and are less worthy of their attention. This can create a very negative impact on your connection as a couple and in turn, the relationship will be destroyed if that person doesn’t wake up to see how they’re emotionally harming their partner.

A Bit Of Good News

Despite me sitting here saying all these negative things, many new and lasting relationships have come out of dating websites. True connections can be started on social media. The best of friends, the best relationships, and deep connections with out of state family members are all positive impacts social media can have on relationships.

So although social media can have a lot of downsides, it isn’t something we need to throw out the window. Just learn moderations when it comes to scrolling through your favorite sites. A healthy lifestyle is all about learning to balance each area of our life so that our loved ones feel secure, safe and desired in the relationship. If you’re reading this and realize that you’ve put your social media accounts and online friendships before your partner, perhaps you need to step away from the screen and be comfortable sitting on the porch just conversing face to face with your partner, before things take a toll for the worse.
