Brandy Ellen and Oldest Child

Welcome to another weekly recap I like to call Flashback Friday. This is where I do some weekly recap of the events, thoughts, and fun that happened during our week here in the Brandy Ellen Writes household.

Today I’m focused on a few key points in the week – Locke & Key House, Cucumbers, and Cupcakes.

Flashback Friday Locke & Key, Cucumbers, and Cupcakes

Read along and then share a comment below about something fun, hilarious or freaky that happened to you this week.

Locke & Key

This one-season series on Netflix is pretty awesome! My 11-year-old decided on this for our next binge-worthy nightly show, and it was a good choice.

We finished it up at 2 episodes per night, with 10 episodes and only one season, this was wrapped up in just 5 nights.

Without giving anything away there are some magical keys that do some pretty awesome stuff. Then there’s this demon-like person, and it’s like this shapeshifter, fantasy world series that could have come out of a dream my 11-year-old had. It’s certain suspenseful, and creepy!

There’s a Locke & Key book too, must be getting that to read with my son. Anyway, it’s a little spooky and has demons and the characters frustrated me here and there, but overall, I think it’s a good movie.

P.S. Locke & Key is the creation by none other than, Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill. Thanks to one of my FB friends for telling me that tidbit of info.

How do you Eat your Cucumbers?

I’ve been addicted to cucumbers lately. It all started when my oldest child, age 17, started asking me to buy cucumbers. She would peel them all up and keep some skin on, then hand a slice to me. We’d bond over a few cucumber slices.

Then, this fueled my cucumber addiction. They’re relatively cheap, like 69 cents a cuke or less. I have been buying about 4 every week and they are delicious.

My 13-year-old, the second child, has been sneaking some though. He just grabs the whole cucumber and bites right into it. Sprinkles some salt on it, bites into it again. Skin and all.

This got me thinking, how do other people eat their cucumbers?

My preference is to peel and slice up the cukes, place them in a bowl of white vinegar with a little water, let sit in the fridge for a few hours and then enjoy!

Cupcakes without the Cupcake Pan

Finally, I made cupcakes and while they tasted yummy they didn’t look so great. I bought all of the stuff at Walmart thinking that this would cure my chocolate craving this week.

Ahem, it’s that time of the month and I just want loads of chocolate!

Anyhoo, we got home and I found out that we don’t own a cupcake pan. Who doesn’t own a cupcake pan? So I did what any sane and rational Mama would do, I put the cupcake liners into a tin pan I had, and hoped for the best.

They didn’t work great. Apparently the cupcake pan is necessary to hold the cupcake liners in place because cupcake batter is liquidy and will slowly weigh down the sides of the cupcake liner until you have a weird mixture of cake batter lined with cupcake paper.

We ate them. They tasted fine. But I won’t live that moment down, the kids love picking on Mama’s cooking and I just gave them more fuel for their jokes.

So there you have it, a few highlights of the week past. That’s all for this week’s Flashback Friday post, come back next week to see what we’ve been up to.

Mental Health Matters – 3 Tips to Boost Confidence

Have you found that life simply has tossed too much at you? Are you living a life that simply doesn’t make you happy? Well, then you’re probably noticing that your confidence has diminished. When you’re not living a fulfilling life, you’ll find that confidence will diminish over time. It’s easy to get to this point in life, so many of us let life pass us by until one day we wake up and realize that we’re not feeling 100% confident about ourselves and our abilities.

Today I am sharing 3 tips to boost confidence as a means to help you regain that confidence and stop letting life pass you by.

3 Tips to Boost Confidence

Eat Healthier

I love this tip. If you read on any website this is one of the top tips they provide to help you maintain confidence, happiness, and overall good wellbeing. You may be tired of hearing that eating healthier can truly help bring more positive into your life, but it’s true! When you snack on oranges, blueberries and other fruits you’ll soon find that you feel healthier which helps boost your mind and then works to keep that confidence high no matter what life tosses at you. It’s all of those vitamins found in fruits that simply work wonders on your self-esteem. I am convinced.

Sleep Often

Sure you may not be able to get a super deep sleep every night because you’re feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders, but you can learn to sleep often. When you have a set bedtime and wake-up time, your body gets used to being in a routine and in turn, you can have more control over your thoughts. When you’re well-rested, you think better and your confidence will simply stay higher due to the fact that you’ve taken care of your mental well-being by getting adequate sleep. It’s a win/win situation when you learn to sleep regularly on a routine schedule.

Let it Go

There are so many things that could go wrong, will go wrong stop thinking about it. There are so many people who can be good to you or bad to you, stop thinking about it. There are so many ways in which this world can turn you into a low self-esteemed person, stop thinking about it. When you hear things that make you feel less confident, remove those words from your mind. If someone is making you feel less than worthy, you have to get control of your mind to let go of those words. Think of that childhood saying, “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”. We all know words hurt, but if you’re dealing with a meanie, then learn to not hear them when they speak ill towards you.

Building Confidence Helps Boost Income

Self-Confidence and self-esteem go hand in hand, these days many people are coming back to their home to find a way to make a residual income from home. What many people who turn to work at home don’t realize is that your self-confidence can make or break your income levels. Let’s discuss how self-confidence increases income:

Dominate Element

Self-confidence and the ability to express yourself confidently in email, a phone conversation or in-person will lead to impressing the person you are speaking to, even if you have no idea what you are talking about if you have that firm handshake, that stand up tall and confident even-level voice when speaking to the potential client; they are more likely to hire you.

Desire to Hire

When you have a high level of self-confidence you have more of a desire to get hired, which in turn allows employers to desire to hire you. An employer wants to see that they are about to hire someone who is confident in their skills and ability to work on tasks set forth for them to complete. Having self-confidence will boost your ability to make others desire to hire you.

Emotions Left Behind

Most self-confident people learn to think with logic versus emotions, when you are able to have emotions left behind and show this to an employer, you are a more desirable asset to the company. Employers want to hire people who have a level head combined with good logical and reasoning skills. Self-confident people are less likely to get involved in any emotional drama that working environments could have.

Make More Money

When researched, it was shown that those with a higher level of self-confidence actually earned more income than those that struggle with confidence. Someone who is confident in their skills and abilities will make more money because they won’t settle for an income less than deserved. When you go into a job interview confident of your abilities and your financial worth then you leave there making more money because you refuse to accept any salary offer below the reasonable going rate for your abilities.

Confidence is ours to be in control of, it isn’t something anyone else should have the right to take away from us. If you truly feel like your tough times are too much to handle and that perhaps you can’t cope, I would suggest talking to your doctor. Don’t be embarrassed to speak up to a professional who can guide you towards feeling more confident with yourself and life. We all have tough times, but there are people here to help, just speak up.

Mental health is so important. I hope that if you or someone you love is suffering from feeling less than worthy that they will reach out to someone for help. It is okay to feel down and out, but it’s not okay to live that way every day.
