If you have a pet, you know that they’re basically family and it would be sad to leave them behind when it’s time for a well-deserved holiday. While there are many excellent kennels you can let them relax in, chances are that they’re missing you a bit too much to relax – and you are, of course, missing them too much to enjoy yourself as much as you should.

That’s why people bring their pets with them when they head off so that they can take part in the excitement as well. Here is a handful of great advice on how you and your four-legged friend can have a kickass holiday together – as it should be.
#1 Think about how you’re traveling
First things first; traveling with a dog in the car is a lot different than checking him or her in on a plane. Before you get started on planning your ultimate holiday, make sure the airliner allows pets on board and make absolutely sure that your pet is travel-ready. Use a direct flight and notify the captain or a member of the crew that your pet is also on the flight. It can be a nerve-wracking experience for both of you, so try to travel by road as much as possible.
It might still be a bit stressful for your furry friend but at least you’re able to stop somewhere and stretch your legs a bit once in a while. It’s the kind of stuff that matters when you’re cooped up in a cage for hours.
#2 Make sure the accommodation is pet-friendly
Besides from the occasional travel sickness, another bump in the road for you might be the accommodation you have booked – particularly if they don’t even allow your travel buddy to even enter their premises. Imagine finally arriving at your destination, exhausted and in need of a shower, only to find that your pet is not allowed. All you can do is, of course, to turn around and head home again.
Luckily, many resorts allow pets and will even try to make their holiday a bit better as well. Have a look at Courtyard Vienna Schoenbrunn, for example, or just give your accommodation a call if they don’t state whether or not they are pet-friendly on their website. If they’re not, you have a lot of other great places to choose from.
#3 Give your pet a health-check
Your pet is pretty much your child and it makes sense to ensure that their health is in tip-top shape before heading off. This is especially relevant if you are traveling by air as it can be such a stressful experience for them – but, in any case, taking them to the vet for a quick check is good for everyone.
It’s is also a great time to have your microchipped and make sure they are up to date on their vaccinations in case you haven’t gotten to that yet, by the way.
No matter how you choose to travel, it’s important that you remember to pack a comfortable travel crate where they can feel safe and get some rest, in addition to their toys and grooming supplies, of course.
Give them a long walk and a lot of exercise before it’s go-time, but make sure you don’t feed them a lot as this will only contribute to potential travel sickness. Other than that, you’re good to go.
