Visit a Nineteenth-Century Estate – Wilson Castle

During a weekend road trip we ventured off with destination unknown yet again. Although there was one trick this time, my boyfriend knew where we were going. I had no idea and had to sit back, relax and wait for the surprise. We ventured into the middle of nowhere Vermont, something I am used to doing, but what I saw next surprised me! We rounded a corner, and there it was … Wilson Castle.

Wilson Castle is a nineteenth-century estate located at Proctor in the U.S. state of Vermont. The house was built in 1867 in a mix of nineteenth-century architectural styles including Dutch neo-renaissance, Scottish baronial, Queen Anne, and Romanesque Revival.

Since I fell in love with Wilson Castle and enjoy sharing New England destinations with you all, I just had to share our experience, the photos and how you too can enjoy Vermont’s only real castle.

The castle itself is slowly falling apart and isn’t fully open, as some rooms have been closed off from the tour as the castle ages. The owner does fundraising events and tours to try to raise funds to get Wilson Castle restored. With real brick, it’s not easy finding people who know what they are doing and won’t cost a fortune. You can visit their website to learn more about how to help them by donating or volunteering.

It is now operated as a house museum and is open late May until late October for an admission fee.

Within Wilson Castle’s walls you will find rich history from over hundreds of years ago. I do not recall the age of all that you can see in here, but one thing that was cool is the chair given as a gift to the prior owner because he had done some work for the Pope at the time.

Vermont's Real Castle Wilson Castle

There’s an old Chinese chair as well that I sadly forgot the history about. No worries, if you like what you see here and are in Vermont sometime they do tours and offer a Halloween type tour in October. Click here for pricing and tour details.

When America joined WWII in 1941, Herbert Wilson joined the Army Signal Corps, from which he retired in the 1950’s as rank of Colonel. He retired to the castle, and in 1962, opened it for tours. He passed away in 1981 at the age of 82 and left the estate to his daughter, Blossom Wilson Davine Ladabouche. Blossom passed in 2010 and currently her daughter Denise Davine is the owner/operator.

Currently owned by Denise, a wonderful woman who we spent a long time visiting along with the other lady, child and young man. I am horrible with names, so pardon me for not recalling everyone’s name.

There is all sorts of history and old artifacts within the walls of Wilson Castle in Proctor, VT. We were like two kids running through our grandparents large mansion trying to find what was hidden in every nook and cranny. This really is a wonderful place to visit.

They have an art room, mutliple bedrooms and while you can’t tour them the servant quarters are still there standing within the home. I felt some energy in the pink room, which left me a little unsettled towards the end of our self-guided tour, but that didn’t stop me from falling in love with Wilson Castle and those who tend to this estate.

If you opt for a self-guided tour at your own pace, they will have you watch a video that tells you all about the history Wilson Castle as well as what to look at while walking around. They made us feel at home and as if we were friends, warm and inviting people who enjoy opening up the doors of Wilson Castle to the public.

When done touring Wilson Castle, take a step outside for amazing views and a swing on the old style swing that was created so that ladies didn’t show their ankles back in the day when seated upon the swing.

It certainly was a different time when this castle was built but I admire the family for continuing on in keeping it open just like their elder’s had for many years. While Wilson Castle is a wonderful family owned New England destination, if we can’t help them find some donations and good quality help to resore the castle, I fear they may not be open forever.

If you or anyone you know can help this family out so that they can keep Wilson Castle open and handed down to the next generation in their family please contact them through their website or Facebook page to lend a hand.

The longer Wilson Castle goes without donations or help to restore it, there will be more rooms shut off from the tour as they aspire to keep the public safe while keeping the doors open. Please do kindly pass this along to anyone who can offer skills of brick work, carpentry and other similar tasks to Wilson Castle.

  1. If I remember correctly every brick was transported from England (so we were told) – it is the most child friendly place imaginable – when we were there, 18 years or so ago, there was even a “castle dog” which totally captivated our grandchildren. We adults would be admiring all the artifacts, the 4 children would be on the floor, surrounding the dog who was getting all the love he wanted!
A TOTALLY AWESOME place to visit and revisit!
